As per the Assembly’s official statement, Töre voiced his objections to a statement made by Yorgos Kumas, the President of the Greek Cypriot Football Association, who remarked, “We can never allow the status of football in Cyprus to change and the Turkish Cypriot youth to open up to the world.”
Töre highlighted the historical imposition of embargoes on Turkish Cypriot football before UEFA and FIFA, a consequence of pressure from the Greek Cypriot side. He expressed sadness over the inability of young people to connect with the world due to these restrictions.
Emphasizing that Turkish Cypriot football teams were once members of the Cyprus Football Federation until 1955, Töre explained that the Turkish Cypriot Football Association was established in response to the actions of the EOKA terrorist group members.
Töre criticized UEFA and FIFA for supporting the Greek Cypriot side, maintaining a mentality he likened to the Middle Ages. He argued that there is a lack of justice in the world and within the European Union, citing their firsthand experience with embargoes.
