International Political Specialist Shay Gal, in his column in the newspaper named Israel Hayem, said that Cyprus is also a problem of Israel, “To save Northern Cyprus is not the role or desire of Israel. But if the threat from the region reaches a critical threshold, Israel must change the strategic stance of Israel. he said.
Gal, “Turks, should be removed from Northern Cyprus,” he said.
Shay Gal’s full article is as follows:
“Cyprus has recently the 51st anniversary of Türkiye’s occupation in 1974-This event is a permanent trauma for Greek Cypriots. For decades, Israel has seen this conflict as a distant Greek-Turkish issue. However, it should be accepted clearly: Northern Cyprus is not only the Cypriot Greek Cypriots. It offers unlimited operational centers to Turkey’s Jerusalem and Iran’s Jerusalem.
Since the occupation, which has caused the death of thousands of people and the displacement of hundreds of thousands, the existence of Türkiye has quietly transformed. The region has now become an advanced base for Türkiye’s army. Here, developed weapons systems, cyber surveillance infrastructure and signal intelligence (SIGGINT) facilities, which are capable of listening to Israel’s military and civil communication, are deployed with the secret terror infrastructure supported by Ankara. According to the leaked intelligence documents, senior Turkish authorities define Northern Cyprus as “an ideal place where everything can be done without police or judicial control”.
Türkiye can deploy armed unmanned aerial vehicles (SİHA) much faster than the Geçitkale Air Base, which was transformed from an abandoned airport during the natural gas voltages in the region. As of May 2021, Bayraktar TB2 Armed Sihas were officially deployed to this base and the more advanced raide UAVs were exhibited at the military parade in July 2024. These unmanned aerial vehicles have the capacity to hit Israel’s natural gas platforms, navy elements and strategic goals in a short time. In addition, Türkiye’s advanced atmaca Gemisavar missiles – with its range of over 200 km – are directly threatened by Israel’s critical infrastructures in the sea. Moreover, Türkiye’s new Typhoon ballistic missile is capable of precisely hit targets up to 560 kilometers. According to Western intelligence reports, missile bases in Kyrenia and Famagusta are ready to deploy these missiles. This is the first direct ballistic threat of Türkiye to Israel and is capable of shooting Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa Bay.
In the meantime, the European Union continues its security cooperation with Ankara despite the occupation of Türkiye’s EU territory. This contradiction shakes the EU’s reliability and creates a danger to Greece, Cyprus and Israel. The aggressive foreign policy, which is shaped by Türkiye’s connections with illegal occupations, sanction violations and extremist groups, puts it on the same line with the bandit regimes rather than NATO allies. Considering the unanimous obligation to take decisions in NATO and the tense relations of Türkiye within the alliance, it is unlikely that the protection within the scope of Article 5 will be activated even in irrelevant conflicts; Northern Cyprus, which is known by the international community as the territory of Cyprus, is almost not possible.
However, the threat is not only limited to the military dimension. This occupied region, which lacks an effective international control, has become a center in terms of financing of terrorism and money laundering. Illegal funds from Iran and Türkiye are transferred to Hamas and similar terrorist organizations through screens. The documents seized in the “Guard of Walls” (2021) and “Iron Swords” (2023) operations carried out in Gaza revealed that Hamas plans to establish an operational branch responsible for the attacks against Israelis in Turkey and Northern Cyprus. In addition, a Jerusalem power cell in 2023 in the region was planning attacks on the goals of Israel in Europe. This Iranian cell reveals that Northern Cyprus is used as a safe port for anti -Israeli operations. In this context, Türkiye’s control over Northern Cyprus allows both Türkiye and Iran to escalate the strategic threats against Israel by overcoming sanctions. In addition, hotels, casinos, universities and ports in Northern Cyprus have become secret centers for espionage, blackmail and intelligence operations carried out by Turkish security forces and organized crime networks; These operations include “Honey Trap” activities targeting international authorities.
It is not Israel’s role or desire to save Northern Cyprus. However, if the threat caused by the region reaches a critical level, Israel will need to change its strategic position. In coordination with Israel, Greece and Cyprus, it must prepare an emergency plan to save the north of the island. Such an operation makes Türkiye’s reinforcements ineffective, eliminating air defense systems in Northern Cyprus, destroying intelligence and command centers in Northern Cyprus, and ultimately re -establishing the Cypriot sovereignty in the international arena by removing the Turkish forces from the region.
This emergency plan can be called “Poseidon’s wrath öyle inspired by the sea god Poseidon. This name symbolizes the dominance in the seas and the destructive consequences of the worst scenario. It also emphasizes Israel’s determination to keep the maritime routes open in terms of protecting strategic maritime assets and regional security. This plan should only remain as an emergency scenario: Israel is not in search of conflict, but must be completely prepared. Even the Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, which was previously considered as low probability, was finally carried out. The problematic Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Project, which Türkiye is building on the Mediterranean coast and attracts the support of Russia rapidly due to its risks, is an important example that needs to be learned from this course. ”
