IU Faculty of Water Sciences Professor of Marine Biology Department. Dr. Gülşen Altuğ and his team started to work with sea bacteria of oil contaminated soils.
Within this scope, bacteria were collected from the seas in Türkiye with the research vessel of the Faculty of Water Sciences of the Faculty of Water Sciences.
As a result of long research, those who consume oil as food were selected among these bacteria.
As a result of the study, oil contaminated soils were cleaned with sea bacteria.
The study was also successfully implemented within the scope of the United Nations (UN) project for eliminating oil pollution of high salinity, which was formed by extinguishing the oil wells given by the Gulf War with sea water at the end of the Gulf War.
“It has an environmentally friendly and capable technology to compete with the world” Prof. Dr. Gülşen Altuğ said that they have produced basic data on industrial use of sea bacteria for many years.
Petro -resistant bacteria, oil as food to consume the ability to prove their ability to prove Altuğ, said they scanned thousands of bacteria.
Altuğ stated that the potential to select the most productive ones in oil removal and to eliminate oil pollution both alone and together.
Emphasizing that the physical, chemical and mechanical methods applied in the world in the removal of oil pollution are ecological concerns and limited, Altuğ said that biological improvement is the methods of the future and that it becomes compulsory in international projects.
Altuğ, underlining that healing with biological methods that mimic nature and do not harm the environment is no longer a necessity, “If we want to cleanse the nature in an area where tons of oil scattered into the environment, such solutions are indispensable.” he said.
In this context, the patented method developed in Istanbul University Technology Transfer Office and Teknokent transformed into a domestic product, Altuğ said, “Istanbul University’s Faculty of Water Sciences and developed within the Istanbul Teknokent, our product has a capacity to compete with the world.” he said.
Soil cleaning on an area of 3.5 million cubic meters is planned Prof. Dr. Altuğ, the use of the developed bacteria against oil pollution is not limited to the sea not only limited to the sea, the Gulf War during the war extinguished with sea water and high salinity ratio to clean the United Nations project carried out in Kuwait, he said.
Altuğ explained that the soil cleaning in an area of 3.5 million cubic meters with the sea bacteria they developed, and that the preliminary trials of this study were carried out in laboratories within Istanbul Teknokent and prescribed in the open area.
Prof. Dr. Altuğ, emphasizing that “biological prescription” specially for every dirty area is developed, “Since each soil structure and oil pollution are unique, we have created recipes containing details such as appropriate bacterial combination, amount and duration to be applied.” he said.
Expressing that sea bacteria are highly tolerant of environmental variables, Altuğ said that bacteria adapted to the dynamic conditions of the sea are more resistant to pH change, salinity and temperature fluctuations.
“The same type of bacteria show different features in different geographies” Altuğ, referring to the success rates obtained in field trials, “At the end of the 17th day, we have detected oil removal up to 90 percent when the appropriate conditions are met. Of course, this rate may be higher in the laboratory environment, but the main thing is to show this success in the field.” He said.
Altuğ stated that all the metabolic properties of bacteria, which are isolated from different habitats from the seas of Türkiye, have been screened and sent to places where they will be used in liquid form after proved their achievements.
Prof. Dr. Altuğ, bacteria, oil pollution in the unique and region -compatible features in the world because of the distinction of similarities in the world, “The same type of bacteria show different features in different geographies. Bacteria we have obtained this geography -specific forms. So we developed the methodology of the patent.” evaluated.
